I've secretly fallen in love with Wordpress as a blogging tool; it has more dynamic capabilities than my former home.

I found a template that I've been able to customize to look very, very similar to my new e-Commerce site.
I can create additional pages that will allow me to post freebies and imagery -I've already got a few populated with current and upcoming contests and a free Wallpaper archive.
The entries are also truncated for quicker reading. You can click either the headline or the link at the bottom that states, "Continue reading...." to pick up the remaining story along with the comments. If you've previously read the topic, you can push right past it to get to older posts.
More ways to search via categories or key words.
Snapshots is enabled to let you see an image of the Web site that's linked before you actually take it. I like that!
The front page allows you can see which topics are the most popular; who has commented and on what topic.

You're more than welcome to jump over to the new blog and bookmark it. I'll add more features as time permits but right now, I've got the urge to illustrate!

Why? Because they have done what I've wanted someone to do for a very long time. Create cross-pollinating menus based on their wine or the meal.

Cirque du Soleil
Why? They never cease to amaze me; I am always amused, bewildered, and in awe of the artistic and physical expression they create. I love listening to their music when I work -keeps me in another plane.

Apple
Why? Because they create the most awesome products like the iMAC, the iTouch, the iPod Shuffle. They've also got great applications like GarageBand and iMovie. I'll post more on these soon, too.

American Airlines Admiral's Club
Why? They keep you comfortable and away from the noise pollution of the terminal concourse. You get free WI-FI access as well as coffee, tea, juice, water, and television. If you've purchased Business Class transatlantic tickets, they give you vouchers for free wine.

Stacation Updates: An Effortless Task

This weekend with 'the wall' went up without a hitch. I was really expecting more of a tumultuous issue than we had, but our predecessors helped us out -and you won't believe how!!

After spending an hour Thursday Night clearing out stuff that lay against the wall, Andrew began light demolition the next morning until I returned from my walk. I dragged my sorry butt into the house and he pulled me downstairs to reveal the idiocy left behind by the former owners.

1+2)Braced by only trim work by our brilliant predecessors. We're thankful we didn't have another hurricane, or worse, a wolf come blowing down our doors!

3+4)Nothing says love like inserting an inappropriate moisture-prone wood door used for dry spaces. They must have installed these for the 'quick sale.'

5+6) Two! Count 'em: 2 micey nests. Tucked neatly under this nasty step -they got in, but they didn't get out. Evidently, they died in place similar to those peat bog burial rituals found in Ireland.

Fast forward to framing
7+8) Jim finally showed after demolition -a much cleaner endeavor- trumor has it that he just got a manicure. Borrowing awesome nail guns from our good neighbor, Mike, we, er, Andrew and Jim built and installed the framing. 9-11)Rubber sheeting applied to outside to prevent moisture and windows installed; Andrew routers out the sections for windows.

12) After cutting and fitting insulation, we used materials given to us by Mike and his former projects -we love handy neighbors. Thanks, Mike! We finally got smart and snapped the drywall to create cleaner openings for the trim that will get inserted. 13) A hard day's work deserves lotsa protein -and a fabbo salad built by Jim. This was definitely photoworthy.

Hints & Tips: Making a Daunting Task Effortless
Sure, I grew up with tools of all kinds and Andrew has an industrial design background, but having these backgrounds doesn't necessarily make any project easy. Keep in mind that:

Egos are sure to be involved. I have to say, Andrew & I mesh very well when it comes to projects: one is the project lead and the other is minion -and we alternate.
Another important factor is research. This may be books we bring home from the home improvement store, online searches, even the next door neighbor. Although it was the holiday weekend, Mike availed himself to us for a consult since he's already flipped a house and is now currently working on his deck.
Right Tools. One needs the right tool for the right job. If you're painting, don't open the can with a screwdriver, snag a churchkey from the paintstore -they're free. If you're doing framing of any kind, use a automatic nailer -it makes a difference. Oh, they're not free, so don't be afraid to rent the tool.
Friends. There are many a guy out there who insist on doing projects themselves. I know that when strength will be tested on an hourly basis, he's going to need help. Sure, there's always me and I'm usually right in there getting my hands dirty, mosquito bitten, cut, but no matter what it takes, employ the help of a friend. If you think the project will only take 2 people, get a 3rd. Be sure not abuse your friend for stupid tasks -use him only for those that require brut strength. You know there's going to be reciprocity, so choose wisely.
Know Your Limits. If a project looks simple and you've got the genius to do it, be sure to schedule between the raindrops. Keep a tarp and phone number of a local handyman expert handy.
Double the cost, Double the time. For any project, estimate how much it will cost, then double it. Estimate the time, and double it.
Keep a Sense of Humor. Any project can get soured quickly by a number of things -egos, primarily. Remembering the fact that we're all imperfect humans "should" mitigate any disaster -provided it's not a disaster that lands us in ER.

There are reasons we have animals and pets in our lives.

If you don't have a pet, find a way to adopt one because they enrich your lives in ways you could never anticipate. Kids should have pets in their lives because they learn to love on an unconditional level along with companionship and camaraderie.

Some animals don't belong to us as pets. The clip shown below reveals that these guys who rescued the baby lion did this the right way. I couldn't help myself, I had to blog this after receiving a link from my friend Jeanne. I love animals dearly and this video will have you tear up in no time; the 4th time I was bawling.

Studio Stacation

I say every year that when Memorial Day has come, Summer's done.

I love Summer and this sucks.

My birthday has passed and Labor Day is right around the corner!! Somewhere tucked in there is my wedding anniversary. yay!

I am enjoying my walks w/J & C in the morning and the dancing fireflies in the evening. So at the very least, I am actually enjoying Summer without the burn. I've attempted several evenings to photograph the staccato dance of the fireflies in the yard -alas, they mate incognito. Ewwww...

Okay, now I am a photojournalist: Taking mating-ritual photos of bugs. Hmm. Maybe I'll just collect them in a jar like every 8 year old does and take photos... now I've jumped off the deep end because I was about to mention the "p" word. I guess that all depends to whom I sell the photos, right?

Wait! I was going to mention my Stacation.
While the US celebrates our independence this weekend, we're saddled with a stacation.

Def: Stacation is the result of remaining at home on a holiday break. It may be due to gas prices, lack of coin, studio products, or home improvement projects that need to get done.

Our old home, the typical ranch built after the WII is showing it's signs of age. The next imminent project is replacing a double glass door (in my new production area) with a wall and a couple of windows. Oh joy. I can think of other things I'd rather be doing.

We've broken up our trips to Lowe's so that we can prevent paying for one of those oh-so-cheap rental trucks which isn't so cheap after all. Tonight: large and heavy materials like plywood, sheet rock, and God knows what else.

I am looking forward to completely renovating the workshop.

The photo above is from our trip to Edinburgh just before New Year's. We got some awesome footage of the fireworks and river of fire walk for charity on film -I just need to take the time to figure out how to download it from the camcorder. Oh! I haven't scheduled my one-to-one at the Apple store yet, I could do that this weekend.

Pfthsth!

Andrew would be so disappointed in me if I ran away from this house project.

Birthday Mnemonics

Well! I thought this Summer was going to be easygoing... I just remembered I've got photos from birthday celebrations, however quiet.

Birthday French Toast

The weekend before my birthday, we had friends Marina & Jimbob over for a long overdue dinner. Too busy talking about the business of art, we never did get a chance to to talk about their recent honeymoon adventures to Sweden. However, she did bring us Asiago Cheese bread that we turned into French Toast the next morning. Yes, I know it sounds strange, but imagine, cheese + cinnamon + maple syrup = not a bad combination. I can never have too much cinnamon and sugar!!

Later that week, I sent Amy a note wishing her a happy birthday (the day before mine) and asked her if I could get her a new paint by number set since I know she has difficulty remembering her complementary colors. She wasn't real pleased because she was still reeling from the 'make your own greeting card' kit I bought for her at Tuesday Morning last year. Hahahahahaha. Perhaps I should have picked up a color wheel for her instead...

In any case, Amy was much more gracious the next morning as she called to invite me to celebrate our birthdays together. We chose the NC Art Museum for lunch and naturally, I had to have the Artist Palette Salad complete with ceramic palette -hole and all!

*Sigh* I wish I had brought my camera.

My Givewaways Aren't for Scavengers

"For every lock, there's a locksmith" I always say, and I'm becoming increasingly annoyed at the fact that there are bottom feeders who turn a sweet incentive for true enthusiasts into a circus for scavengers.

I'm watching my blog stats and I'm capable of seeing where folks come from and how they get here. I'm noticing a deluge of folks coming from a particular site (redhotsweeps.com) that is strictly dedicated to post Giveaways for said bottom feeders.

I'm an artist who wants to give back to her supporters as a thank you and now you've turn this into form of entertainment where you also have 'Bragging Corner' & 'Member Brag Pages'. How Nice.

Getting Structured

I'm getting behind on my blog entries because I feel like I'm getting behind on a secret project that I continue to nurse this month, so some of this may just seem out-of-sync to those of you local folk. Just add one week to this post. ;)

Summer's first heat wave has washed across the SE like an old electric blanket. Smoke residual from the forest fires in the East and the urban heat are beginning to take a toll.

Regimen
My morning walks with my neighbor and her new baby continue for the second week, er, third week. Last Tuesday was beautiful, but by the time Friday rolled around, we were already lathered by the 2nd lap around the canopied neighborhood. Each morning, the 3 of us walk at least 3 miles at a rather quick pace. My wedding rings have now been pushed to the 'traditional setting' because of swelling, regardless of how much water intake.

Nice time to start a regimen, eh?

What's also remarkable about this little daily constitutional is that what ever issues I have plaguing me, seem to work themselves out; I've heard the same about yoga. Meditation is very much the same -if you've got an issue, make it known to oneself and after the session, it should resolve itself. I'll be resuming that once I can make my physical exercise a mainstay and when I can be confident the pussycats won't disturb me with their feline fiascoes.

J, like any new mom, is eager to step on the scale after sweating her butt off and typically disappointed. And... why is it guys can sneeze and lose 10 lbs? I feel a personal guilt toward my body. I punished my body by not returning to the gym (after the honeymoon) because I didn't lose 1 single pound after 5 weeks of heavy, thorough exercise. After 3 weeks of consistent exercise, I refuse to step on the scale for at least another 6 weeks. I also refuse to punish my body for not responding the way I think it should -after all, I am 7 years older than my last personal training experience.

The Pact
Additionally, Andrew & I have made a pact to push each other but I'm not sure he'll actually use his voice of doom I've taught him. He won't use it on the boyz, so why am I expecting him to use it on me? Returning to our exercise regimen, thus far, is going well. Hitting the cardio and weights 3x a week is feeling rather good.

Last night, I did 40+ sit ups on an incline bench without breaking a sweat. I lost count because I got bored, so I stopped doing the sit ups. Yes, I am goofy. So I continued working on my abs thru other sources -then I felt the pain. I am elated that my rubberband is back!!

The Personal ReOrg
As far as the structure, well, I've redesigned my own agenda. I've never been a person that adhered to 'factory instituted structure' as schools are run today. I also very much enjoyed working late into the night, but now I really enjoy knowing just how much I've accomplished before 10am. Imagine that!

I guess time is just relative.

Getting up in the morning has never been a problem for me, neither has working hard -I just liked the idea of 'setting my own hours,' even if that meant working until 2am. The real challenge laid in the hours between 5-7pm when it was dinner time and I just wanted to finish a few loose ends; unfortunately, the family had other ideals. Dinner... Pftsth!

Some people get it right away, for others, like myself, it takes a while longer. Design my life around the most important goal: Me.

The question always asked of me was, "What do you want to do?" Heh! That part was easy. The real question should have been, "How do you see yourself fitting into your own life?"

One day, I might actually retire (who retires from illustrating, really?) and my body will always be here, gliding one day to the next, month-to-month, year-to-year. Hopefully, when I'm 85, I'll be proud to walk upright into the gym, lifting free-weights like the boomers and geezers today knowing exactly how I fit into my own life.

Giving Girls Presents

It's my birthday today. Years ago I deemed my birthday a national holiday, just as long as you address me as Queen Elizabeth.

I found a great dialog that befits today by Charles Schultz:

Lucy: Beethoven's birthday is December 16th Shermy! Have you decided what you're going to get me?
Shermy: Yes! I'm not going to get you anything!
Lucy: What kind of a holiday is it where you don't give girls presents?

Chardonnay: He's a guy, but he plays all the girl parts.

Andrew, to my great fortune, is nothing like Shermy, he always makes me feel like every day is my birthday. He's always on the lookout for the most thoughtful gift, object that will bring me the greatest joy. I usually ask that it bring me the greatest production joy so that I can actually perfect my use and become a money making venture. So, this year he asks, "What would you like?" casually during a Jeopardy commercial break. I shrug my shoulders and really can't think of anything I need that would allow me to make a few extra bucks.

"Uh, how about a pair of earrings? I know it sounds completely selfish and I usually make most of what I wear, but I can't make diamonds."

His retort? "I was thinking a zoom lens for your SLR."

Needless to say, the diamonds were a passing phase as I was all over that lens he suggested. After deciding I needed a zoom lens, Andrew decided I needed a new SLR kit to go along with it but it was becoming increasingly expensive to shop ala carte.

I'll give you one guess where he went. Yup. Costco.
Update: I had been remiss and didn't provide a link so I went back to search for it, and they have no more.

My man is the most product conscious researcher next to yours truly, and found a comprehensive Canon Rebel XTi outfit for me saving $600. I know he just wanted to get his hands on my Canon Rebel XT that gave us so much thrill during our honeymoon.

I will find time to have fun with my new toy -even if that means procrastinating on other projects.

Quiet Down, Cobwebs

I can't take it anymore!!!!!!!

After Mayhem May, I've been able to effectively re-evaluate my home studio. I enjoy creating products for my customers and unfortunately, the production & manufacturing is overriding my studio space -my cockpit desktop can no longer take the demands of my prototyping.

Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries by the Royal Philharmonic play in the background as we clear our former home theater-turned-exercise space-turned inventory stash. The stationery bike & treadmill got expedited thru Craigslist last week -yay- and now I eagerly photo more great stuff for sale. I'll post a note when I finally get around to uploading the goods (old TIVO, DVD multi players, CD players...).

The next transformation: ECStewart Manufacturing & Production Area.

Costco cashed in a great deal of our paycheck as we bought 4 chrome mobile shelving units from them this weekend. After the first 2, I realized my inventory hadn't moved, only the inventory from Andrew's office. So, back to Costco on Saturday we went for another 2 sets. Man! After erecting the recent units plus the others we have in the house, we could probably win a race.

Stay tuned for the final reveal!!

Shelving Hint for the Vexed:
When affixing casters to the bottom of the units, wedge something useless under the frame to allow for rotation -say, a 5lb weight. Using one's toes is only good for the first round of casters -they begin to put up a fight if you ask for more.

MACLove, PC Out, Game Over

I'm feeling a little like Lewis Black these past couple of weeks when it comes to Apple: Mac's in, PC's out, game over (include twitchy index finger pointin' straight atcha).

I've been committed to have my weekly one-to-one sessions at the Apple store and while my head isn't necessarily in the game this month (too much imagery on the gray matter), I'm enamoured with Mac.

There are sooo many nice surprises that reveal themselves to me as I work, that I wish I had someone with whom to share this adventure. Sure, Andrew understands -he initiated this change, but from a designer standpoint, well, it goes much deeper. The everyday way a person connects with the Mac is 'the way it should be.' I think the surprises are small features, but they're not -they're a part of the system. Like peanut butter is with jelly, the fundamentals are no accident, they're planned.

I do have one major complaint: Apple is too darned efficient. Period.

Andrew decided that it would be best if I had my own Shuffle and I agree. After borrowing his on a walk around the neighborhood this week on a most beautiful day, it was an extremely nice supplement. I really try not to fall in love with every gadget on set my hands on but this innocuous, simple tool encouraged me to keep walking -I continued enjoying the day. Miss Design-a-holic did not want to return the studio.

Andrew ordered the Shuffle from the Apple Web site Monday evening; it shipped from China Tuesday. An email encouraged Andrew to sign off on the FedEx slip that he could print out and hang on the front door for Friday's delivery, it arrived a day early. Imagine that.

Tomorrow, my Shuffle arrives (because I didn't answer the door). Now I just need to shuffle my butt back into the gym.

I've been working like a mad dog all month attempting to get imagery out to vendors -specially after Surtex & NSS.

This week much of my time was eaten up helping out Second Chance with all of their last minute collateral needs for the upcoming auction; I'll probably want to initiate a postmortem on that ordeal.

Studio Tip 1: Collateral for any event needs to be planned, devised, and designed well in advance of say 6 months or more. This gives the studio time to source paper, printers, and even ask vendors to consider pro-bono work, otherwise micromanaging the mess at the end is a bad idea -a very bad idea.

Studio Tip 2: When you plan your events out a year in advance, go to the sources at the first of the year (that's January 2nd folks) to be placed on the waiting list. Many services will provide charity work but if you're not on that list, you could be wiped off because they've either made their selections and/or have an exclusive agreement with a similar charity in the neighborhood.

Studio Tip 3: If you're new to an organization and have the opportunity to forge a new path, ask how things were done previously; not because you want to emulate them, but because one needs to know the successes as well as the pitfalls. If you have access to the original designer, get in touch with her -she can outline everything she's done to help make your job easier.

Meanwhile, here's an excerpt from our travels this month that I forgot to post...

ICFF + Surtex
Sunday flew by faster than the speed of sound. Andrew woke feeling like crap so I had to do the thinking for both of us. Luggage got packed, we missed breakfast, taxied ourselves to Javits to check our bags at the luggage corral. Shew!

We managed to walk NSS quickly and efficiently, keeping a close eye on time. We needed to find the people I needed to meet and keep those appointments made prior to the show. Managed to find [most of] my colleagues at Surtex and conducted a small personal trend report. Hey Robin! Hey Andy! Sorry we missed you!

It was great to hear that mfg were receptive to my work and I think that by not exhibiting at Surtex this year forced me to work differently than if I had -preventing me from placing my all marketing/advertising eggs in one basket. Upon returning home, we both surmised that not exhibiting was a smart move on our part.

I have to say that I got as many pre-show inquiries as I would have if I had exhibited at Surtex. While my eyes give away my exhaustion, I'm finally seeing a turnaround in spite of the economy.

Boy, I sure don't miss those overpriced, less than stellar tasting tuna sandwiches at Javits anymore!

Core77 Party

So, Andrew snagged for us entrance into the coveted Core77 Party during the infamous NYC Design week. Like an overworked travel agent that he is, he left the Secret Decoder Ring Email that was sent by the designstaff on our printer. As we sat helpless in RDU for over 3 hours waiting for our plane, we lamented the fact that we couldn't get secret directions to get to the party... then I remembered Jim.

Jim's a reliable friend who watches our pussycats from time to time and I knew he was scheduled to check in on the free range Saturday afternoon. I sent him a quick FAVOR SOS to his crackberry pleading for him to enjoy the cloak and dagger expedition down into Andrew's dungeon to find the secret directions. After tapping the directions with his wand and aloud he said, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good", he sent them to my iTouch. Sweet!

We were exhausted today after all the prep work and cool down walking thru ICFF, but I couldn't let Andrew's bum knee prevent us from making an appearance at this party where he scored tickets. After all, Jim went to all that trouble (probably hurting himself in the process) to get us directions...

I'll tell ya, this party was a hellava lot more fun than the uptight party at the MOMA last year. This party was free, they had free pizza (although we didn't need it since we just gorging ourselves with warm chocolate cake and a glass of wine) and party tricks for us kids.

Dinner at the Cupping Room

We made plans to hit the CuppingRoom after our ICFF walk to snarf down our favorite sandwiches: The LaPaysan.

It occurred to me the last time we were there, they had a photographer in taking ambient shots of the place. Walking out of the place, we spotted the very photo she took including us!! Naturally, I had to share my lack of sleep giddiness with someone -so I snagged the waitress during her cigarette break to drag her all the way thru the restaurant to the other side to show her this:

"You may not care, but that's okay. You see those people in the back left corner? That's us!!!"

Sure, they misspelled coffee, but I feel like Mike Wyzcowski in Monsters, Inc. when he had that barcode taped across his face on the cover of the magazine.

For some reason, we were able to get up at a reasonable hour without setting a clock this am and get to Javits. Unfortunately, we couldn't get our entrance badges for NSS because they weren't set up yet.

Travel Tradeshow Tip #1) Watch when shows begin and end at the Javits if they run concurrently. Just because the registration booth is set up doesn't mean it's comprehensive -it was only for exhibitors today.

Travel Tradeshow Tip #2) Make sure to register earlier than 2 weeks prior to the show so that you can have your passes mailed to you; these passes can get you into all 3 shows. We had to cough up $50/ea to get into walk the ICFF today -could have been free if I had been thinking a month ago! The plus side, is that as a visitor/buyer/design firm, other than an exhibitor, one gets a barcode applied to the badge so that you can have exhibitors *ping* you and send you the material you request -one doesn't have to carry it around like a beast of burden.

This show was immensely inspiring and met great product designers with whom I may be partnering in the future -depending on circumstances.

I gave Andrew the camera because he hasn't had a chance to play with it as ICFF is the *only* place folks will allow photos.

As design lovers, we loved the British design aesthetics. However, this piece was very intriguing because it looks like a digital image on the front, it's actually wood ends. We poked our pudgy fingers between the ends to confirm our eyes speculation.

NYC: ICFF, Surtex, & NSS

Hurray! Postcards do work! I received a call from a major mfg Thursday asking to make an appointment while we walk the show this weekend. They are one of those, "Don't call us, we'll call you." Baby, I got the call!

After hours spent in front of the MAC growing my designer's rear, I was finally able to make printouts to toss into a book for appts this weekend only to sit at RDU for 4 hours waiting for our plane to arrive. Weather was bad in NYC last night and evidently, air traffic controllers are hard to come by, so we made friends with a hilarious guy from Microsoft while scoring a sandwich from Jersey Mike's next door.

This was the first time Andrew and I didn't fight over the window seat (yes, we're 12) because he happened upon a former colleague that he hadn't seen in years and we were seated next to her. Being a transplant to NYC, she gave me recommendation for a good nail salon. Yay!

After finally arriving, we decided to head to Penang for a late night dinner (sorry, Kate! but now I know it's on 72, between Amsterdam & Columbus) and enjoy our favorites.

Wednesday Woes

While I'm not exhibiting at Surtex this year, Andrew and I are walking the show including NSS & ICFF. As I struggle to get imagery done for client meetings I've set up for Saturday & Sunday, I'm also churning new ideas for the 2nd Ladies Night being held next Wednesday. Man, I wish there were more hours in the day!

Prior to our trip to Vegas, I had one of my favorite charities ask for a logo for their Annual Auction as well as a few pieces of print collateral. How could I say no? Sigh. Well, Spring always seems to be an extremely busy time for me compounded by what else, the common cold -what a nuisance. I've been saddled with a darn chest cold since our return and it has naturally, eaten into my critical design time.

MAC + Podcasting: Embracing My New Frontier

Because I want to become intimately familiar with the amenities of my new iMAC PDQ, I have acquiesced to purchasing the one-to-one sessions at the local Apple store.

I had my first session last Friday afternoon with Andrea. Andrea was very good-natured and immensely tolerant of my forcing her to listen to my free-wheelin' intro created in GarageBand. Once she traversed my terrain of spotty MAC knowledge, she was able to provide succinct guidance into the world of 'look like you know what you're doing' within my chosen subject: Podcasting.

I have to say, I'm extreeemly excited to learn this vehicle of marketing and communication.

Another smart product that comes out of Apple are the session guides: this helps Andrea and myself go thru the checklist to identify just how much I don't know. She began to understand my MAC knowledge base and would interject crossover hints from one application to another -thank you for that! Since the one-to-one cost is ~$100 for 52 weeks, I'm getting some pretty hefty knowledge for just $1.92/per session or $8.33/mo or $.27/day.

Now that I'm becoming versed in the new frontier of podcasting, what subject matter would you like to learn from me?

Enamoured with GarageBand

While in Vegas, I've snagged a few moments to learn Garageband to create my first podcast. It's an amazing program that takes very little effort to create a professional sounding product. Think I'll add an English accent -that makes any stupid thing I say sound brilliant.

Here's a short piece I think I'll use as my Intro for future podcasts. Please let me know what you think -I'm absolutely astounded as it only took me 5 attempts!!

Vegas: Day 2 - ACRE, O, Bellagio, & Richard MacDonald

We spent a few more hours walking the ACRE show this morning and visiting with gracious artists. Walking shows to determine investment worthiness is imperative to one's business. Our observations cement our 'walk before each show' mantra due to an unlucky mix of a young show and bad economy, it's going to be awhile before this West Coast show gains momentum.

Unfortunately, we saw artists huddled in mass because there were very few buyers walking the show. It was 11am before one artist had her first visitor: us. I did my best to alert them that we were visiting artists and to ignore us the moment a buyer walked in; that happened very few times.

I have to say, the Bellagio is probably my favorite place to hang. It's got the water show at the fountains, the botanical garden: a sanctuary of fantastical displays & sculptures amidst a haven of flowers and butterfly garden; the lobby shrouded in Chihuly glass, and currently, an exhibition homage to Cirque by Richard MacDonald that precedes Cirque du Soleil's theatre.

We scored tix to Cirque's "O" and enjoyed a rather inexpensive dinner at Noodles. O was good and now I find myself in the afflicted condition to compare all Cirque shows. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why the obsession with all the brides and the show didn't have that seamless transition from one act to another as Quidam. It was enjoyable, but the critics exclaim that if you see only one Cirque show in Vegas, it should be O -I disagree. Thus far, I think it should be KA or if you're an open minded adult: Zumanity. Now that's a cool show. Swimming in champagne glasses is absolutely amazing. Quidam is my all time favorite.

Preceding the theater, is Richard MacDonald's current installation. Because O finished at 3:30am Raleigh time, I couldn't get photos of his fabulous sculptures. Forgive me, you'll have to head to the artist Web site to get a better glimpse. The photography of his work is better than what I could have captured: low lighting, didn't have my Canon, and an obnoxious cattle call of people pushing to get out. I couldn't wait to get to bed.

ACRE, Carnevino, & KA

The first day we walked ACRE for a few hours to get the feel of the venue.

The accepted artists into ACRE were incredibly talented. Although fabulous, we did see quite a bit of 'sameness' within select categories: metal, jewelry, fiber, wood, which can be good and bad. Additionally, we met some new friends who hailed from the West side of the states and were incredibly generous with their information; I happen to believe that separates East Coast and West Coast artists.

I've always been eager to share my thoughts with friends and colleagues about how I see their work progressing -many times it's in a direction that never occurred to them. Lately, I've decided to just hold my tongue with the suggestions, since folks on this side aren't quite as eager to hear my thoughts as I am to solicit them -perhaps I'm just a closet Californian. It was refreshing to have folks coming out into the aisles to touch my Bacchus book asking me if I had considered alternate ways of designing it or asking about potential partnerships -nice! Their generosity took me by surprise every time.

Keeping an open mind is important for a creative. No matter how ideas come to you, taking or receiving a fresh approach to one's challenge is always educational. I may never agree with their ideas, but I know the path of creativity is to volley potential nuggets back and forth until the best idea is generated.

Took the monorail (every city should have one!) from the Hilton to Harrahs. Walked over to the Venetian, past 3 guys slapping tickets on their hands to gain attention to the passerbys -an act itself.

After sauntering thru the Venetian Piazzo & Canal, we picked up our reserved tickets to Cirque's KA. Man I love a good Cirque show.

Dinner at Carnevino, a Mario Batali restaurant was no disappointment. Andrew enjoyed the NYStrip with an excellent rub and I managed to score some Pacific Halibut.

Both excellent venues for an evening in Vegas.

And still... no desire to gamble.

Marriage Byline

Have you ever, ever created a marriage byline? It didn't occur to us to create one until tonight.

We've returned to Las Vegas this week to walk a couple of tradeshows: ACRE and Interop.

Looking for dinner at 9 o'clock at night (6pm East Coast time) within our hotel, the prices of oh, just about everything, blind sighted me. As we were shuffling from one restaurant to another looking for a decent bite, I noticed that all restaurants were competitively priced and Andrew lamented, "Ya know, we should decide when we're going to have a nice meal." I asked him to define "nice" as we stood in front of each menu that wouldn't let the average person walk out of anything less than $30/per. Eventually, we found sandwiches and a bottle of wine at a gift shop for ~$45; this allowed us to escape the pillaging of our wallets of $70, for which we were grateful.

I'm such a Scot when it comes to buying food. Ugh.

Andrew's the font of useless knowledge and fortunately, he's got enough sense of humor to put up with me. We really do enjoy each other's sarcasm -tonight was no different.

We happily returned to the room and flipped on the tele. I'm attempting to balance the little open plastic container that hosts my chicken caesar wrap precariously sitting on the hotel vinyl folder while perched on the white on white duvet pillow topped bed. Out of no where Andrew exclaims, "Oh look! It's Ed Bernstein!"

Immediately I think, "Oh crap, I should know this" as I look up and try to identify the person on the flat panel. My mind races as I try to match his face like a scene on CSI to any one stored in my personal visual database. Nada. I got nuthin. Then I realize it's a local attorney looking for accident victims.

Funnyman.

First night in the entertainment capital of the world and suddenly it hit me like casino pit boss: I'm about to byline our marriage.

Priority + Crunch Time = No Cell Phone

I'm a walking Murphy's Law, there's no doubt about it.

It never fails. Whenever I decide I need to drastically cull my projects -and in my case, before we head out of town- I get 11th hour calls to work on something completely new.

I don't have a rule book I live by, but the past few months and the past few trips, I have started to create one.

Rule 1:
Staple the damn passport to your sternum.

Rule 2:
Staple the mobile to the passport that's stapled to your sternum.

Rule 3: Stop ALL work by noon the previous day before travel; this allows one to get household chores done; this also includes packing.

So, Jim, if you're reading this: STOP TRYING TO CALL MY MOBILE! It's at home attached to my Bacchus purse.

Also, Jim, please send me an email (I am at least connected that way) so that I can send you Andrew's mobile number.

I feel so naked.

Persistence & A Laff Outloud Moment

Being the introvert, a sometime single focused design-a-holic that I am, I probably miss more windows of opportunity because there are days when I just don't 'want to sell.' It's tiring for an artist who's filled with visual and suddenly have to switch gears to conversational strategy. Infrequent blog updates not withstanding.

Over the river and thru the woods, I read aloud the Adventures of Johnny Bunko by Dan Pink to Andrew as we drove to the outlaw's house this past weekend. The book was well reviewed by Tom Peters so Andrew promptly snagged it from Amazon.

Johnny Bunko was a quick read, well, it would have been if I were reading it silently to myself. Just how do you read a comic book replete with visuals to the driver of the car, anyway? The book is geared toward young graduates, but Mr. Peters found it useful for all folk in every stage of their careers; I'd have to agree. Because I'm such a sap, I teared up over one tiny part -perhaps I'm just tired. Er, perhaps, I'm a sucker for happy endings.

Regardless, there are 6 major points each person must understand for oneself and number 4 resonated with me: Persistence. In spite of the economic downfall, I continue to persevere by tirelessly designing by both day and night.

Now, the professional planets were aligned for me the past few days. I received some encouraging news: looks like I'll be partnering with a prominent vendor with whom I've been working over the past few years on some exclusive Christmas products. They love my animals, so I need to get crackin' on cats, dogs, and holiday motifs. Yeaaa!!!!!!!!

How cool is that?

Dog Breed: Yorkie Revisited

This Yorkie is featured on the classic arts & crafts background. I just love the champagne background, so rich. I think he'd look great on a woven afghan.

Luxe Suede Journals: New Color Combos

Wow! After the past few local shows, I can see that folks are enamoured with our journals! And that's a good thang. I wish we could make them as fast as they're selling, alas, we're doing what we can by finding materials and encouraging folks like you to pre-order when available.

Local Event: SCPA Open House

If you're local to Raleigh, I'll be part of Second Chance Pet Adoptions Open House tomorrow.

Second Chance has moved into a bigger facility that houses most, if not all their kitties, and you'll be able to see the all the wonderful dogs and cats ready for adoption.

If you're already brimming with pets, bring yourselves by anyway to meet with training professionals, grooming professionals, and massage therapists to learn how to treat your fuzzy family members special. Additionally, they will have microchip program, food, drink, games, and special events for kids.

Oh, Andrew and I will be revealing some goodies from the CalligraphyPets collections. While I donate to Second Chance thru-out the year, I will be donating a portion of my sales proceeds made tomorrow directly to the agency. I may even have a raffle!!

Update: Despite the inclement weather, the open house brought a few people in to see the myriad of pets available for adoption and the new facility. I noticed many many tabbies available, two even looked like our Bacchus and Cheshire. Quietly, I said to the Bacchus doppleganger, "Don't get fat! Please for the love of all good pets, don't get fat!" I doubt he'll listen.

This Original Scotch Terrier, the Yorkie, is the first of many dogs I will be illustrating this season.

It's going to take a long while to complete the hundreds of breeds out there, so please be patient. To understand the popularity of the breeds, I decided initially, it would be best to start with the 2007 top 10 dogs and continue from there. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions and I'll take them into consideration as I render each pup.

An Ode to Madam

Madam's a breast cancer survivor; she's also in surgery today.

Having been cancer free for ~10 years, we learned a few weeks ago that Madam has had a recurrence of cancer yet again in her second breast. After the minute discovery, she made a decision that it was not worth having just a lumpectomy.

Good for her, I say. I do my best to determine what I might do in any grave situation -prior to event- so that I can rely on my clear judgment to carry me through any adversities. Personally, I believe I would probably have both of them removed simultaneously so that I wouldn't have to go thru all of the adjustments that she's had to endure: new bras, a new boob, another new boob because she melted hers on the stove, a new bra fitting because she lost weight, and yet another new boob.

There's also the bowl we have to loan her because she forgot her 'boob box' during her weekend visit -she's got to place her 'girl' in the bowl to rest!

Last Fall, Madam made the suggestion that when we created the suede/leather journals, that we find pink for Breast Cancer Awareness; I thought that was a fine idea. Andrew and I also thought it was a fine idea to bring one to her as a gift. Also, after having a few glasses of wine, we came up with the hilarious idea of having a photo shoot that includes her topless with the Bacchus book -she was definitely in agreement.

This is my Ode to Madam and the transformation she continues.

The juxtaposition of the the grunge texture behind Madam is about decay and the darkness of cancer that surrounds her. The lotus is a Chinese symbol for health that is found both in the painterly foreground as well as the calligraphic borders both top and bottom.

MAC Update: For those of you watching my MAC frustrations, I think my episode last week was due to a glitch in Photoshop. After reinstalling the app, I was able to get Madam's piece done without incident. Today, my MAC memory has arrived, so my favorite husband can feel vindicated by his MAC recommendation.

Studio News: Spring Ads

For the past week, I've been pulling out my hair (not sure whether it's gray or not at this point) due to my new MAC; my new Photoshop wants to crash unexpectedly. I'm confused, annoyed, and turning the air blue. I've got a deadline!!!

I had a number of files open earlier this week (same day, same hour) that were several Meg, Gigabytes even and didn't have a problem. Suddenly, I can't modify one file to save my life.

Finally, I gave up.

Folks have been telling me how much better off I'm going to be when it comes to MAC vs PC. Pftsth! I cannot concur... not yet anyway.

This is the ad that I managed to get out the door at the 11th hour. Think I'll turn it into a postcard and send to manufacturers, too.

Last week, I thought I was plagued with a nasty head cold, turns out it was allergies. I've never been susceptible, but never say never, right? I was hanging out in stasis all week, never getting any better or worse, but I thought it best to stay away from the gym and friends just to be safe.

Over the weekend, Raleigh was endowed with rain and because the pollen has been wetted, I can breathe clearly now! Yay!

I'm sorry I didn't do too much communicating the past few days. Between creating a new flower series, composing a new ad for an industry pub, I get into those 'introvert' and 'single minded' focus.

Meanwhile, thought I would treat you to our private Azalea Fest right here in our own yard.

I'm miserable. Not only did the common cold set in, but it set in both head and chest. It's my fault entirely: I returned to the gYm (Y=YMCA) for the first time since our honeymoon and I was dazed and bewildered. All the equipment looked pretty, new, and shiny -so did the magazines- they did me in.

I'm miserable because I was enveloped by the SOS (shiny Object Syndrome) and I even brought one home with me. Ohhh, magazine Gawds forgive me for succumbing to periodical temptation.

I've been striving to get a little work done -and it's been very little- so I've attempted to enjoy a few happy classics on Netflix. Attempted is the operative word since I've never seen "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" -OMG what a, er, a, ahem, "dysfunctional" film I never want to see again. Now, I thought I'd top that off with a happy film, "Dr. Zhavigo" -another film I've never seen; both ripe with existentialism and not a happy film by any extent.

Upon Andrew's later return, we filled ourselves with salmon and DVR recorded "Daily Shows." I must say, the DeBeers Parody within the 5 Year Anniversary was a brilliant piece (it's at the very end).

Now I must drag myself to bed and hope I don't give this crap to my favorite husband.

SCPA: Treble Clef Auction Logo

This past week, I've been wrapping up projects for charity. The newly designed logo is for Second Chance Pet Adoptions' Annual Auction.

Second Chance wanted an emblem to represent a jazz theme. Their initial idea was to include several elements of what jazz meant to them: saxaphones, piano, musical notes, mardi gras etc. While it's a challenge to get clients to understand the difference between an illustration and a logo, the idea of music needed to be strongly conveyed. Fortunately, to have a client like Second Chance who understands that bringing a myriad of ideas to the illustrator/designer and allowing the designer to rearrange and edit, strengthens dialog and trust.

My solution was to embrace both cat and dog into the shape of a treble clef. The colors currently represent the Mardi Gras but the elegant lines of the treble clef provides longevity, allowing Second Chance to implement the logo in all manners of music. In the future, SC can change their music theme from caribbean jazz, latin jazz, the blues, ragtime, big band, even classical.

Studio Report: Site Updates + Chat with Me!

Google has crafted a new tool: the Chat Box.

I discovered this box on an artist's site that I stalk (I'm benign, I promise!) and thought it was a very good way of keeping in touch with my clients who want instant info from me about my products and services.

Immediately, I found a way to create my own and installed it on my blog a week ago and now on my site on the collections and care page.

Status & Messages
I will do my best to change the status when I leave the studio so that you'll know my whereabouts. One can also leave a message and I'll find it in a new tab upon my return -so do make sure to leave your name and brief message so that I can be prepared to answer your queries effectively.

Additionally, I've updated a few pages on CalligraphyPets to make finding my products a bit easier. Namely, the collections page has been further enhanced with dropdown navigation and more imagery in cleaner subsections. I will be uploading new art and updating the care page as soon as I can.

I hope this helps you in your explorations and purchases. Feel free to chat with me if you find something awry.

MAC Syndrome

I did it. I finally converted. I'm now a MAC designer.
(insert applause here)

After years of struggling -unwittingly- with low memory and immense frustration, Andrew finally made me see the light. It's amazing how time flies. I had the old Dell for 4 years and I thought I was fine with it. Sure, in the beginning, but after struggling with huge files and several windows of wait time to complete any task, I'd soon lose my interest and wander about my studio, working on other projects. Ugh!

My first small project was inserting our iSight capture into the screen of this MAC image within Photoshop. Needless to say, I had to purchase another Wacom tablet straight away so that design won't feel painfully awkward with the mouse -feels like working with a bar of soap. One can see that the light used with iSight overexposed our faces and I really didn't feel like correcting the skin tones -ala bar of soap.

Quiet Reflections

This photo was taken in Edinburgh as we were walking back from Dogmanay. Around the new parliament building, along the Dynamic Earth Museum it continued to rain. My Canon caught a building's reflection in a raindrop hanging on a bud!

Ladies Night at the Wine Merchant

The Wine Merchant last night had a great night for their first premiere of Ladies Night.

My 'wine themed' work was well received after working hard on getting it prepared for the event. In case you missed it, I revealed some surprises last night and in a few days, I will have it uploaded to CalligraphyPets site for you to purchase as well.

The event was interesting. As I watched women walk in as singles, pairs, or even a group, they all had that hunt and gather mentality. If you've ever read our entries on SAVANTBlog on how women are the market, you might want to brief yourself.

A couple of things to remember when selling to women:

Women are different from men, period.
Men are transactional, women form relationships. By this I mean that men buy the product and leave while women form relationships with experts in the stores they purchase.

Women Gather. Women gather everything from information, items, to lists... Women don't like to feel like they've overlooked a product as part of their consideration set; men just move on. The ladies last evening wanted to walk out with a bottle or two of wine, as if those bottles were the coveted personal prize. I watched them immediately gather around the bar to taste the evening's array, as a matter of course. They commenced pacing up and down the aisles to examine each and every bottle, above and beyond the few that were available for tasting.

In some cases, we answered questions or recommended some new bottles as we stood by my art work. Someone asked me about layered cake... I'm not sure what dimension she was coming from, but it was almost like someone in an online forum asking the whereabouts of their hat.

Mid evening, I counted the women, then I counted the men. In addition to the 3 men working, there were 2, including Andrew. It was amazing to see the turn out and I could see my new friend, Kurt, up to his eyeballs in estrogen.

They Came to Buy Wine
While I did get a great reception to my work, I didn't sell a piece -and I didn't expect to. That's indicative of women and purchasing. When people see my work for the first time, but it wasn't part of the consideration set, they dismiss it. They came to buy wine. That's okay, that's how human beings work. Sure, my name was included in the advertising, but it was about: wine, not art about wine.

Andrew and I tried explaining this to Cory later that evening and I expressed how I hope they consider bringing me in again for their next event. Because if I know anything about women, it's also about expectation. While I wasn't part of the consideration set this time, they'll be looking for me next time.

Sure, I felt mildly disappointed, I'm not going to lie. Having been one of the easiest shows I participated in, I almost wanted to equate my effort with sales. Then again, I won't since some of the major shows I've exhibited, I've had rotten luck.

Oh, by the way, I just got a call from the Wine Merchant. Evidently, Andrew had submitted my name into a raffle and now I've won something. I hope they guys down at the store aren't taking pity on me -then again, if it's a bottle of wine, I'll take it.

Amidst the March madness, I will be working hard on the next generation of wine themed work. I'm not going to say much but I can reveal the new series name: Cosmopolitan.

I'm looking forward to participating the next time they decide to host it again.

So, I've been working like a mad woman to get the second half of a postcard campaign complete this week for licensing manufacturers. It's important to make sure one's name is on one's art, otherwise, it gets lost. Because ADs pin work to their bulletin boards, it's best to have contact info on the front, too, for quick reference.

Meanwhile, had to visit Dr. Eric yesterday to get my Invisalign project reviewed and resumed wine themed art preparations for the Raleigh Wine Merchant premiere of Ladies Night.

Celebrating Us!

Andrew and I are quickly approaching the day of our first date -7 years! Additionally, Andrew no longer has to walk around like a Cheshire Cat as he'll be orchestrating brand programs for a global company, leaving his former employer behind. Yay!

Between the Shows

This past week has been cyclical in terms of work and venues. Suddenly, I find myself with not 2 shows, but now invited to a 3rd mid-March.

Andrew and I returned home Friday evening and collapsed from exhibiting at the Chapel Hill Women's Benefit. We noshed on the 2nd half of his delish pizza he made for us the previous night and gorged ourselves on our chocolate delights we purchased at A Southern Season in Chapel Hill during our exhibit recess between lunch and cocktails.

Now, it's been a beautiful weekend and I plan to...

Stay inside and create new imagery;
Corral donations for select charities;
Finish collating tax stuff + send off to CPA;
Cut backing board for my prints;
Prepare Necklines & WinterIce for shipments

But instead, Andrew pulled me outdoors and we resumed our Sunday afternoon open house tour to see new McMansions and renovations in our area. At least I absorbed a bit of vitamin D.

Now, I'm striving to upload the rest of my WinterIce pendants & create a fun label for our foodie gift for our friends this evening, but it's 6:05 and Bacchus is now walking all over my keyboard to let me know that it's past his Splash Time. Heh! More on that later.

Man, if nothing chaps my hide more, it's someone stealing my work. I knew it would come to haunt me sooner or later and now I've had to call on my IP attorneys to police my work. Bleck. Folks think that by changing something 10% makes it "theirs." I've heard excuses ranging from:

"I've given my cat an eye!"
"My line work is scratchy!"
"My line work is thicker!"
"My cats have whiskers!"

Stop. Just stop. I know you like my work -I like my work. It's taken me over 40 years to develop this style and I'd appreciate it if you would take your thieving black soul somewhere else. I'm not inviting you to steal from someone else, just stop and please just go away.

Moments ago, I got an invite from Cloth, Paper, Scissors to submit "Your Studio Mascot."
Hmm... where have I heard that before? Last Fall, I submitted my studio photos to their call with links to this blog to see more; YSM had been developed & designed prior to the call. The YSM announcement & graphic button had also been uploaded to this site.

I'm sending Cate, the CPS editor, a note about how disappointed I am in their editorial direction and lack of IP consideration. I'm sure this very public idea served as inspiration for their article and it would have been nice if my efforts in creating YSM were cited as inspiration.

Not sure how to do research to see if someone has already come up with the same idea? A quick Google search for "your studio mascot" shows my site at the top of the page. Puhleeze. E'nuf said.

I should also cancel my subscription to Cloth, Paper, Scissors.

UPDATE: Sometimes a coincidence is just a coincidence...
We had a talk with the publisher of CPS today who was understanding of our concern and he was apologetic regarding the issue of "Your Studio Mascot." He indicated that this is a phrase his wife has used for quite some time to reference her studio pets and that's how it got into their magazine. He did acknowledge that my site "Your Studio Mascot" was published and public long before their article came out and he is going to see if there is a way -on a very tight deadline- to reference the site in their upcoming issue or Web site. We appreciate his candor and his sensitivity to this matter and look forward to enjoying Cloth, Paper, Scissors for years to come.

I really do love their publication as it was one of the first crafty magazines that holds my attention and is worthy of subscription.

Addiction + Living With Creatives

Living with me wasn't easy -until Andrew and I met.

I'd have to say in retrospect, that living with others was Hell. Living with a creative has to be like sharing the same space but on different planes of existence -pretty frustrating for both parties. Whenever I'd get into a heated discussion with some putz from the past, I would find myself back in my studio creating. My creations were never much, but I knew that if I kept building my techniques, continued to build my illustration or photography swipe file, the mere act of creating soothed my wounded soul.

Does removing the self from a hostile environment and creating art become art therapy? I know it [creating art] was always therapeutic, but I needed to continue to create. Formally trained, I don't believe that my drive was because I was momentarily saddened, but to offset my current job as a pre-press designer -not exactly creative. Perhaps the two fed off each other to maintain the existence of the creating act.

I learned to cut the strings from the hostile environments, got my own place, and continued to pursue freelance more vigorously. At this point, I am no longer faced with sad, stupid arguments that compelled me to sooth the wounded soul.
This time I thrived vs merely survived. I thrived on the research it required to create a strong ID package. I thrived on coupling code with design. I thrived on taking new classes that allowed me to experience a different perspective of illustration. I thrived simply on getting out of bed in the morning.

That's me in the foreground, thriving.

So, when does the need to create become an obsession? A vice? Or worse, an addiction? Sylvia White published an article about Living with a Creative and the Necessity of Creating Art for the Artist. She maintains that in addition to basic elements of Maslow's theory (food, shelter, etc), the artist drive to make art is not an option, but a necessity. The non-artist partners of creatives have a hard time understanding the concept of addiction and how it is related to art making.

Now, living with a creative is interesting -always interesting. The changing, growing, morphing is no longer frustrating... I know, because I've finally met my creative match: Andrew. We watch the world around us and happily remain at home, creating. Occasionally, we'll engage in celebratory festivities, but then find ourselves obsessing over the next phase of production on a project (like watching resin harden) before we have to dress for the fest. I find myself lamenting as I gauge the clock, "Okay, if we have to leave at 6:30, I have to take a shower by 5:50 so that I can dry my hair, dress, put on my game face, and come back down and check the resin. Crap, that's 40 minutes, I can't leave the resin for more than 30 minutes. Okay, I won't shower. I'll just wash my face, brush my teeth, dress, and check the resin. I'll put on my game face in the car."

Like most addictions -I am familiar since my family is riddled with alcohol, street + Rx abuse- I know I go through classic symptoms of withdrawal when deprived of creative work for too long. I get fidgety, breathe deeply several times throughout the interim, pace, become irritable... Some may suffer from physical complaints such as headaches, body aches and often times find themselves depressed for no reason. Miraculously, these symptoms disappear when given the opportunity to work again.

The primary reason: We artists are wired differently than the rest of you, maintains Sylvia White.

Are my obsessions a vice?
Wikipedia's definition of Vice states that a Vice is a practice or habit that is considered immoral, depraved, and/or degrading in the associated society. In more minor usage, vice can refer to a fault, a defect, an infirmity, or merely a bad habit. Synonyms for vice include fault, depravity, sin, iniquity, wickedness and corruption.

One way of organizing the vices is as the corruption of the virtues. A virtue can be corrupted by non use, misuse, or overuse.

I believe that everyone has a vice; we're human. A vice is a mere manifestation of a bad habit. But is my habit bad if I create art? I am not necessarily removing myself from population to indulge secretly, because I very publicly display the final piece for show or sale. What vice-riddled individual can show off their end result?

Is my obsessions a virtue?
Opposite of vice is Virtue. The four cardinal (hinge) virtues are Justice, Courage, Wisdom, and Moderation defined by the Greek philosophers. There are Roman, Buddhist, Samurai, Christian, Islamic and other virtues to be considered, but I thought keeping it to the simple 4 would suffice.

Is creating art a virtuous act? Hmm, I really can't see how normative or moral values play an integral part of creating art.

So, is my obsession a disease?
Habits Begets Addictions, Addictions Begets Disease
My obsession doesn't cause disastrous consequences on my health, my freedom or the lives of others. I'm not so overly obsessed that I can't sleep, or choose not to sleep. To control most of those urges, I bring a journal to bed, sketch down ideas, then sleep. Also, I'm not giving up activities. I make sure to plan couple time with Andrew: trips, shows, shopping, dinners, creating... Oops, it snuck in there.

My addiction may be well beyond just scoring a few extra hits of dopamine when I generate an ink trail with my brush. Dr Paulus of UCSD, states that "Addiction is not just about substances. Addiction is about disrupting the processing of pleasure; the balance point is shifted so you keep creating more and more urges, and you keep wanted more and more."Hmm, so I guess the success in the ink trail ensures positive association, but I believe on a different level of satisfaction. Because I know that I can recreate the pleasure of brush to paper, I am in effect, procuring my own drug. I know the drug will always be there to tap, therefore, I procure daily on a systematic cycle.

In the end, a sale of the final piece does reinforce and reward my motion of leaving the ink trail; it could also elicit beginning stages of 'disease'.

Perhaps my love of art is really just merely a passion?
Colloquially, addiction refers to something for which a person has a passion. I think this may be a closer label to my state of mind.

I'm a designaholic.

I'm a designaholic who has just finished posting this adorable owl and her baby as a teaser on ETSY.

Is this the first step to curing my own insatiable desire to beautify the world? Nop. It's my own small way of letting you know that I can't stop breathing design. I live design. I dance and sing design but only hit vibrato when my car strikes a chuckhole. I eat design -actually, Andrew serves design and then I eat it. Hell, I even blog design.

Some of you have been following my recent adventures abroad with Andrew. Some of you are completely bewildered as to why I would take the time out to blog or even stay up beyond the midnight hours to optimize images so that you, too, could enjoy what I've been experiencing.

I confess, it's the rush.

If I weren't a fine artist in the midst of building my little empire, then I'd probably be writing furiously on the inequities of human rights, or animal rights for that matter.

Up until the 11th hour before we were to set off on our honeymoon, December 19th, I was still designing. Actually working on prototypes in our workshop because I wanted to finalize as much detail in the process before returning home and launching the new line.

This morning, Andrew sent me a link to Seth Godin's recent post about Workaholics; it's not what you think. You should read it as he has unmasked the true spirit of my unwavering commitment to my enterprising endeavors.

Now I should go help Andrew finish making his savory chicken pot pies, but first, I'm sure I'll want to tweak this entry.

Thought I would tantalize you with another scene, courtesy of our honeymoon. This dragon was found scaling a building hunting for young blood. I'd advise anyone with children to keep them close as this dragon was collecting them to take them to a feast, er, for a feast.

Weekend Update

Our first weekend together as honeymooners and we were sick. Never together of course, we alternated our ickiness back and forth -just like the social disease. Fun Fun Fun.

Once in awhile I have to let loose my tight renderings and do a little experimentation in other mediums: this time it's photography.

Because my background is in both fine arts and graphic design, I do yearn to have fun mixing composition with photos on a more surreal level. Back in the Studio

I'm back in my chair, pushing my cat away from my keyboard as I read email and type another blog entry. I'm doing my best to sustain the after vacation glow. I want to get out and walk on those wet cobblestones of Edinburgh. I like cities.

There, I said it.

Many people squint their faces when I get enthusiastic about walking the cracked pavement of urban areas. Admittedly, I need a respite now and again from the city, but I'm craving the energy of building my business and talking about my work -I can only get that in a dense area, unlike Raleigh.

Although, back in my home base of Raleigh, I need to work smarter and more effectively about getting my work noticed: more press releases, more kits, a marketing plan that works as hard as I do. That's on the design board and I'll make Andrew plan my strategy. I need a calendar that dictates to me since I'm so free-wheelin' when it comes to creativity -sheesh! I have to be.

I worked extremely hard last year putting in more hours in a week than I can count, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I'm hoping this year will pay off -economy be damned.

Across the seas, I would check my email on occasion to make sure the business was still tended. I wouldn't respond, but at least check those emails that needed to be addressed upon my return. I received some orders and because I checked myPaypal account (across the seas) they flagged my account, refusing my re-entry. Dammit.

So, now I sit here, helpless while Paypal 'reviews' my secret answers to confirm I am who I am -sound familiar? Heh. I'm sitting in my own little box, albeit much prettier and comfortable than conjured memories of old war movies as my orders also sit partially completed until I can get my account released.

Now I think I"ll begin my list of business to-do's for the beginning of the week:

Copyright my images
Review a contract
Work on a custom order (details forthcoming)
Clean up my Web site
Work on new product development

That's just to start.

At least I can look forward to returning to the gym as I didn't lose a pound with all that walking. Maybe I'll surprise Amy by showing up to yoga...

Passport Panic: Testing Andrew's Charm

Typically, we were able to obey our alarm clock and continue our journey forward without any hiccups. However, this morning was different.

We arose, took a shower, ran down to the gallery to choke down breakfast and hail one of London's famous black cabs to Paddington Station. We accidentally chose one of the front cars of the train to Gatwick at the guidance of 2 train station authorities. Pushing our luggage into the designated compartments, we collapsed into a booth.

Something was amiss -this car looked a little more roomy, clean, and had tables. Er? I surmised to think we were in a first class car (FCC) -Andrew just shrugged his shoulders and said, "Whatever." Okay, but I'll be summoning my reason to the conductor when he asks us why we're not in coach. It's only a 15 minute ride and the cost of a first class ticket is a bit steep, but I'll apologize profusely and tell him that I -in all honesty- didn't know if we could move from car to car while the train was in motion -many of the underground trains in certain cities won't allow it- and it's exhausting to wait for permission. Additionally, I didn't want to get off the FCC because I was afraid the train would leave the station without us getting back on another car.

The ticket meister allowed us to remain, but asserted that many people 'do the same' as I just did. I would have moved but dammit, I'm not going to abandoned my luggage just to sit my carcass in another seat in another car on the train -that's just asking for trouble. I retorted by telling him that he should have "First Class" printed on not only the outside of the train but make it evident on the inside as well. First Class was in tiny letters on the outside, but it wasn't repetitive -and who cares when one is in a hurry and you're looking for the nearest door to corral your pieces like you're herding fat, troublesome cats???

Shew! It's all about timing.

We disembarked the commuter train to another station filled with elevator doors; these led to another train that took us straight to our terminals. Up another elevator, down a long corridor, and around the bend into security Andrew finally asked me if I had my passport. I was sure I did as I clenched my chest desperately looking for my passport shackle I typically wear around my neck each day. I assured him that I had it and would find it immediately.

We talked aloud, as we usually do, about where it might be. I'm balanced bags on the little cart, pulling my backpack off my shoulder and clumsily opening zippers expecting my passport to fall into my hand. Andrew then remarks if perhaps I might have left it in the safe at the hotel.

Silence.

Andrew's eyes widen like I've never seen before.

Gulp.

I know what this means. It means travelling back to the Waldorf in London (a 45 minute trip). It means missing our flight. It means several grueling hours under a dank, secluded room, harsh light, a steel table and interrogation. It means sweating profusely until I can prove I am who I am. I'm too strong for a nervous breakdown. If Andrew has to depart the country without me until I'm able to retrieve my passport, then I can handle it. I'll eat airport food until I can travel. I'll make friends that can bring me food. My clothes are mostly clean, so that isn't an issue. Thank God I'm not on my period. I know that my driver's license isn't good enough, but I try.

Remember to breathe. Breathe. You've been walking several miles a day, so your heart won't be too stressed from this and let you down.

Let's see if Andrew's charmed essence has expired.

Andrew's the luckiest guy I know and not because he has me -that's too easy. I'm talking about what ever Andrew wants, Andrew gets. Parking spaces near the front door, tickets to sold out shows, deep discounts on accommodations, upgrades to Business class... this list is endless.

Me? A walking Murphy's Law. Always. Andrew's charm helps to cancel that out -at the very least.

Andrew's travel savvy and a few elements allowed us to move thru this caustic experience with a few burns, but nothing as I imagined, conjured by memories of World War II movies. I babysat the bags as Andrew called the hotel to secure my passport sleeping in the safe. He and the hotel security began with suggesting that the passport get transported by taxi -but the driver could not confirm arrival time before the plane was due to depart -in 45 minutes. We talked with airport security and I offered up suggestions like getting the passport number from the hotel concierge, perhaps even getting a faxed copy of the inside pages...

Bingo! That did it.

Meanwhile, several parameters fell into place, giving security reason to believe my story. Andrew had his passport; we had already travelled to several cities during our journey without incident -beginning in the States; we were able to corroborate our story with the hotel; the hotel was able to provide copies from their location without incident. Additionally, airport security called USImmigration to pull up my profile and reach a harmonious, but temporary consent to let me board the plane.

It was now in the hands of USCustoms at RDU to let me pass.

I wouldn't recommend this tactic to everyone as it isn't precisely cut and dry as I've laid out. However, if you keep your record clean, one shouldn't have nearly the issues that many people do incur because of oh, say lack of sleep -as was in my case.

I'm reasonably confident that my name has been added to the Homeland Security list now. Oi vey!

Passport Tip 1: Always Always Always carry your passport on you. At all times, no excuse. Pick pocket experts state that the front pockets of your jeans or the inside breast pocket of your shirt, jacket, or coat are the most difficult to reach without alarming you.

The easiest pocket is to cut, rip, or reach is your back pocket in slacks. They say that if you're wearing tight jeans, that it's still difficult to pull, but I'll stick with the front -thank you.

My ID shackle works too, since I tuck in between the layers of my sweaters, under my jacket.

Passport Tip 2: Make several copies of your passport inside page that includes your number and your mug shot. Tuck them into all pieces of your luggage and into a coat pocket that you normally wear. Should anything get separated from you, you'll still have the one and only important document you'll ever need -your passport ID.

Upon boarding the plane, we looked forward to the long 8+ hour flight in comfort. The flight attendent continued to empty the bottle of cabernet into my little port glass as I watched 3 movies. I resisted snoozing because darnit -it isn't every day that I get to experience Business Class and I was going to stay up for every last minute!!

For the record, that huge scoop of Ben & Jerry's chocolate chip ice cream was Andrew's. I can't eat dairy and I was imagining just how many fat grams were in that bowl -that always makes me feel better about my plight.

Last Night in London: British Museum Surprises

One of our must-see venues was the British Museum. He reminded me the Elgin Marbles were part of the permanent installations, but because Greece is insisting they be returned, there's no real understanding of "when" they'll be returned.

The Elgin Marbles refers to the collection removed by Lord Elgin in Athens between 1801 and 1805. The collection includes artifacts such as sculptures from the Parthenon, 247 feet of the original 524 feet of frieze; several metopes; figures from the pediments, and various other pieces of architecture. It also includes objects from other buildings on the Acropolis: the Erechtheion, reduced to ruin during the Greek War of Independence (1821-33); the Propylaia, and the Temple of Athena Nike.

Yeah, if I were Greece, I'd want them back, too.

I do love the British museum system, they don't charge admission and they allow one to take photos -yay me!!!

The Terracotta Surprise
The museum reportedly closed at 8:30pm so Andrew was off to get our coats from the coatroom while I remained behind to take as many photos as I could possibly manage. He returned fully loaded but with a little spring in his step as he urged me to follow him to Information. It seems as though the museum was scheduled to remain open until Midnight due to the temporary exhibit: China's Terracotta Army.

Evidently, the show has been sold out for months but Andrew's charm worked for us tonight: We scored the last 2 tickets for an entrance at 9:10 pm. After an overpriced mini-bottle of wine, we were called to queue up for our time.

The exhibit was simply amazing.

Last Night in London: Harrods

As we settled into our room, I got suddenly peckish. I do my best to control it with a nibble here and there, but it crept up on me instantly.

Andrew! Save yourself! The ugly monster has just reared it's ugly head!!

In desperate need of comfort food, we found a cozy restaurant right around the corner in Covent Garden: Covent Garden Kitchen. Covent Garden is right 'round the corner from the Waldorf, walk 2 blocks thru the theatre district and voila!

After Salmon and mashed spuds rolled with tomato (very savory) we dashed to find a few meager gifts for the family at Harrods.

Chocolate Coffee Cookies; chocolate honeycomb treats; a Harrods kitty for the boyz, chocolate covered brazil nuts for Dr Bob; and a kitty cat Harrods bag for Madam -shudda got for meself one. Argh! Guess we'll just have to return!!

Las Vegas for Shoppers
Inside Harrods is a real treat -one should take a day to just walk through. I wanted to take photos in the holiday gift extravaganza they were hosting, but security was extremely tight, telling us to put away cameras and remove backpacks from shoulders and carry them down by our feet.

We only made it to the food court which is unreal. Harrods have several floors but one can spend hours on the first. It's best to keep strict time because getting lost is inevitable. Also, we had to really watch our purchases because everything cost us 2x more than actual, so our souvenirs were quite limited. If you were walking near me, you'd here me price items aloud, "Hmm, 6 pounds means 12 USD for us. Humpfth! "

Last Day in London

We awoke to a light dusting of snow of the rooftops of the city- very pretty. The flakes seemed to lighten the heaviness of the darkened stone that made up the city. Reminiscent of Mary Poppins -wrong city, I know.

Our flight from Edinburgh was uneventful, although we had to wait over an hour to retrieve our luggage -British transport system sucks.

Tip: Don't make plans the day when arriving in London -they rarely work out.

Andrew was ever so thoughtful when planning our honeymoon -he included our last night stay at the Waldorf Astoria. Yay us!!

Tip: Because the Waldorf is part of the Hilton chain, Hilton points can apply to one's stay within the system. Andrew had enough to pay for the night. We would have stayed 2 nights, but that's another story. Details forthcoming.

We caught our new Harrod's Kitten attempting to order room service but he didn't have our credit card number or the room number. Heh! He must get the audacity from my side of the family.

It's our Honeymoon!!

Tip: We remembered to tell folks briefly (who would listen) that the reason for our trip was because it was our honeymoon. Telling those who are affiliated within any part of the service industry will -in most cases- indicate this to their manager; often, the staff may be empowered to make special upgrades as a surprise to the guest. Do be sure to thank them on the spot and at the end of the event, or they may recant their gift.

Edinburgh: The Heather Gem

I'm always on the lookout for new and exciting advances in the arts and this trip was no different.

Compressed Heather

Along the Royal Mile, we unearthed a beautiful solution to reaping heather, a Scottish plant famous for it's purple bloom. The gems are handmade from the stems of old heather, too old to provide any nutrition to wildlife, and are compressed, cut into shape, and lacquered.

While most pieces were cut small and formed into earrings, I wanted a large piece to admire both sides. It was tough to pick just one. I want a lamp or something large and sculptural out of this work -it's gorgeous!!

Edinburgh: Dungeon Explorations

Finally, we had the opportunity to meet up with Kate & Neil (+Friends) tonight. They're a hoot to hang with and Kate graciously coordinated an evening to tour Edinburgh Dungeons for the 6 of us. I felt at home because Kate's friend had begun the evening giving the ticket meister grief -I must be home.

Although I got spooked a couple of times, the tour was almost hilarious. Initially, the guide needed a witch and decided to pull out a very wacked-out mum -we're not sure just "what" she was influenced by. She was quite mouthy and while I'm sure the guide hadn't planned for this, he dealt with it the best that he could. Oi!

Edinburgh: Last Day and I Smell Snow

For the last day in Edinburgh, we strived to plan our day in accordance with the imminent rain. While walking up the Royal Mile, we ducked into kilt shops that sold authentic Scottish garb. Andrew was secretly hoping to find MacLaughlan tartans on more than just a tie. Evident on old maps, it seems that the poor clan was at least able to find land on some obscure inlet while the Stewart clan took over most of the territory.

We happened upon contemporary interpretations of apparel that were just hilarious. I did hope to find a bustier in Stewart tartan, but fortunately for me and the fact that we're married to the USDollar, they did not have it in my size. Some times, it's lucky that supplies are limited that interest me -prevents me from overspending.

However, I did fall in love with a relatively new idea that hasn't hit the States yet -compressed heather. Because it is plentiful, an artist has crafted a beautiful approach to jewelry and I just had to pick up a pendant -it had the most heather variation that earrings did not. Photo forthcoming.

Throughout our honeymoon, we did not see a flake of snow. However, when we stepped out of a Scottish store the air hit my nose and realized that I could 'smell snow.' It should be here by tomorrow before depart for the airport.

We arrived at St. Giles church on the Royal Mile and decided it would be advantageous to take a peak inside.

After our tour, we needed a nosh. We enjoyed a dry piece of chocolate rum cake with pear (the pear filling was very good) and coffee at the Always Sunday Cafe. We dodged into Blackwells (we sell knowledge) bookstore to pick up Deathly Hallows in British English and two Edinburgh folklore books. More coffee and 45 minutes later, we had our final traditional Scottish meal at World's End: Fish & Chips + Drambuie Chicken & Mash with a pint of dark ale.

Next: We're on our way to meet with Kate and Neal for Edinburgh's famous underground dungeon walk.

Hogmanay's Dogmanay!

Scots will do anything to socialize with others and dogs will the pack.

While Hogmanay is filled with parties -street and indoors- for mostly humans, New Year's Day concludes the events with Dogmanay. Yup, that's right. Fuzzy faces that are either Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed, or Siberian Huskie team up to compete in dog racing on grass. They pull three-wheeled rigs round a set route on the grounds of the Holyrood Palace vying for first place.

This is definitely suitable for the whole family -except the cat.

It did rain and we thoughtfully brought the umbrella, but the landscape was gorgeous. An eventual mist took over Arthur's Seat (an extinct volcano) making photography an interesting challenge. The Palace Grounds, like any other lawn, were exceptionally green with all of the rain and responded like crushed velvet.

Power Naps were mandatory before we headed out to party with the Scots.

Andrew had scored tickets to the street party and a new venue at Hogmanay: the Hoog. We donned our paper bracelets and headed out without our constant daily gear of heavy coats, cameras, & backpack; I felt naked without them.

Strolling down the street, we noticed a similar herd to that of the Torchlight Procession, but without the fire. I believe we moved through about 50,000 people to attend our Hoog Party prior to the Fireworks. In the Assembly building, we grooved to brass bands, Ceilidh dancing, and smooching like Scots against pillars like it was the end of the year. Er, wait...

Anyhow, my time watching husband led us out before the gates closed to witness some fantastic fireworks lite from the Castle. We met up with celebrities like Brad, Angelina, a brooding Clooney, and Alyson. Of course, the Regal Nigel, Photographer at large insisted that his mug shot be taken as well.

Edinburgh: Traditional Experiences

We began our day with the idea of taking it as easy as possible before our hearty party with the Scots tonight. My body hurt quite a bit yesterday, actually, both of us were exhausted that we passed on dancing at the street party last night. So, today we took in quiet traditional Scottish events today like touring the woolen mills, tasting whiskey, pints of beer, and hearty food.

Having never had Scotch Whiskey (smells like cleaning fluid to me), I decided while in Rome, er, Edinburgh, I should at least go for a decent tasting to gain appreciation. The Whiskey Expert at the bar assembled a flight of 4 distinct whiskeys with different flavors. While I was able to discern the sweet whiskeys from the smoked, I had difficulty appreciating the harsh affects of the spirit. Poor Andrew felt compelled to finish the 4. Bleck.

I'll stick with wine and beer although I think I saw a whiskey liquor come out of the closet and the Whiskey Expert talk about how much better it was than Baileys -I love Baileys. Hmm... I'll have to try that later.

It started to spit harder while we walked down the Royal Mile to locate a traditional Scottish Pub -that certainly isn't too difficult but price is always an issue. We happened on one on the corner of St. Marys & The Royal Mile for traditional fare. Andrew wagered that if he liked his bangers and mash here, that we would return Jan 2 and he'd have to try the haggis. Doesn't sound interesting to me since I'm not a huge red meat or "meat surprise" connoisseur.

Update: We just learned more about haggis, thanks to the FoodNetwork. Andrew's decided against it. Read the recipe all the way to the end -hilarious.

Edinburgh Hogmanay: Tips

Andrew and I strive to set our priorities where the plunging dollar is concerned. We've found this delightful hotel that is a serviced apartment complex that allows us to cook and mull about at our leisure. We've saved a few $$ making our breakfasts, washing our clothes, and in the evening kicking back with a bottle of wine.

Just around the corner is a convenience store for incidentals; we're on the bus line to an exemplary grocery store; and just down a block from a fully stocked wine store.

Overheard: I heard this next line in a comedy routine, but now, for the love of Bacchus, I heard this with my own 2 ears. A gaggle of very young women, just at drinking age, entered the wine shop and walking thru clumsily completely bewildered by all the pretty labels. Lil Miss Blonde bumps into me as she informs her minion as she pulls down a bottle with her mittens and flips it upside down, that the depth of the punt dictates the quality of wine.

"OMG, I didn't just hear that!?" "Uh, yes we did." We asked the storekeep if he could erect a sign about the punts and their relationship to wine, and he just laughed. "Just nod, smile, and let it go," he instructed. We all roared.

Electric Converter Tip - When travelling abroad, bring more than one converter. This will allow you to multi-task your electronic components -if you're tech-dependent like us. I didn't want to be so much on this trip, but I realize that if I can blog along the way, I don't have to remember what I did last week.

Travel Diary Tip - If you want to keep a travel diary in artist sketchbook form, bring a journal and write about your senses and take photos like crazy. Remember that they're not for public consumption, these swipe files will help when you sketch a vignette later. I've taken hundreds of photos that include crap like garbage, modern conveniences, and people and my audience will never know it when I contrive a bucolic scene.

Travel Blog Tip - If you want to keep a consecutive diary based on dates, entered several draft titles on each day so that you can enter your posts later; this also works if you want to elaborate later and include a note about details forthcoming.

Overheard: One Scot telling a visitor, "It's not raining, therefore it's a nice day."

Clothing Tips - Dress for the weather
Each part of the world has its own intrinsic climate disposition, just be prepared for it. Andrew is relentless when it comes to checking weather forecasts, alas, many of the online sites conflict. Me? Because it's late December, I dress in layers regardless and just look up at the sky for rain, sun, or snow.

Before you depart, shop for staples like:

Good shoes I'm not talking about bringing your Jimmy Choos, I'm referring to the Winter comfort mocks from LLBean. Rubber soles are a good thing -specially walking on slick, wet cobblestone.

A good coat. When salespersons ask what you're looking for, it's okay to tell them that you're shopping for your honeymoon that's taking place in the Europe. I had my ideal coat visualized (a long faux sherling) until a number of salespersons were actually from the UK instructing me that I need to dress for wet. While that turned my shopping on it's head, I had to toss that proverbial coin: dress to impress or dress for my health. I don't have sacrifice style, but because we saw the dollar dropping like crazy, I opted for my Columbia Double Whammy purchased 3 years ago. I also brought my leather coat and have had the chance to wear it in London -a little warmer and a little dryer.

If a not-so-handsome coat befalls you, one can always dress from the neck up:

A great scarf (forgot my Stewart plaid at home dammit),
A great hat (love my Princess Diana hat purchased several years ago),
A simple pair of earrings (make sure they lock -walking is a serious sport and you don't want to lose them); and
Tinted lip balm (Neutrogena is one of my favs).

Assuredly, you'll crop your photos from the chest up anyway, so don't even let the double lined coats make you feel self-conscious.

Clothing wise, I've been a very happy camper through-out our trip.

Photo Tips - If you're feeling a bit self-conscious about your weight, you might want to rethink your fear of being infront of the camera. I'll elaborate more later, but for now, you can always plan your photo-ops with only the head, shoulders, and a important element in the background.

For instance, last night, I finally broke down and bought a Stewart tartan blanket. I set up the digital camera on timer and snuggled under it w/Andrew. Unfortunately, my head looked as big as Shrek's and deformed. Today, I'll try another pose -like wrapping the blanket around our shoulders and having Andrew do the arm stretched-out self-portrait trick -he's getting very good at that.

With this, I'll be able to look back at these photos fondly without being reminded that I couldn't get my "svelteness" back before our trip.

Edinburgh: Hat's Off to Compliments!!

Mae West said, "I'd rather be looked over than overlooked." I'd agree with that.

So, I'm trying to come up with an appropriate title for this entry:

Judging a girl by her hat...
A hat of many styles...
A hat by any other name...

Perhaps I should explain. I have to come clean: I love hats. I don't normally wear them 'round town because it's too warm for Raleigh unless I'm working out. Plus, I get major hat hair due to my painfully thin hair and oily scalp. All one has to do is breathe on my hair to get a reactionary... oh, never mind. I digress. But for the love of Jackie O, I love hats. My old high school chums would agree.

Several years ago, I bought a inexpensive, chic, alabaster, albeit synthetic hat to wear for skiing. Skiing was a disaster: sprained my knee but got looked after by a cute doctor. This chic hat I have dubbed, "Princess Diana hat," I believe, possesses a certain charm. Similar to Jim Carey in "The Mask" but oh-so-much prettier. My Princess Di hat is a great looking hat and I must say, looks great on me. (insert smug smile) From the looks and reactions I got in Europe, other's thought so, too.

Usually, my attempt to remain modest is pretty successful. Once in a while, however, I must speak out when something so provocative becomes patently obvious and in this case, I'm happy with the way my jaw bone relates to hat. Please don't call me conceited. I swear, it's the artist and designer within that is always working 'round the clock to make the world a better designed place to live. This includes being brutally honest with myself like, "sure my hips are widening, but how do we play them up or down?" Or, this house is getting cluttered, how do we eliminate the clutter, or better yet, hide it since we'll never really be rid of it?

Disguises and enhancements: that's my design key to life.
I was taught to approach one's wardrobe by a simple mantra: recognize the fads vs fashion. Make the staples in your wardrobe workhorses so that one can play with accessories to move effortlessly like a chameleon through-out the day. Choosing timeless classics allows one flexibility no matter where you find yourself.

New Year's Eve in Edinburgh was due to be a clear but chilly night, so I donned my Princess Di hat. Mind you, I had been wearing this hat all week and but heard not a word, until tonight. My Princess Di hat is not currently 'in season,' but I didn't care. I love the hat and it's a classic style. While waiting for the fireworks display to begin at the castle, we'd make impromptu friends. One gent on the street came up and complimented me on my hat. Took me by surprise, but made me feel cozy inside, although Andrew was doing a fine job of that, he always does.

To wish you were dressed differently is to waste the moment at hand.
Moments become minutes, minutes become hours and suddenly, you've wasted the evening pining over what you could never be: yourself. If you're confident in what your wearing, then you will glow.

I'm glowing blue.

Case in point: Andrew scored tickets to the newly created event "Hoog" in Edinburgh during Hogmanay. 'Hoog' was created because the last 2 years, the New Year's Eve street party was cancelled, due to small issues like 80mph winds. While many of the women were dressed to kill, I was dressed to keep my *ss from freezing off. When we walked in amidst the sea of glorious tartan, the women were dressed in scantily clad chiffon dresses; I got the chills just looking at all the bare skin. We were dressed well, but humbly. My basic ensemble consisted of black dress jeans, a black v-neck sweater, and my oh-so-comfortable brown sporto heels -basic and boring from a partier's perspective. I pinned my Edward Gorey skating cat (often found on my hat) onto my newly purchased tartan wool scarf worn like a Scottish Bridal sash across the shoulder, dangling from my ears were my amethyst drop earrings, and proudly baking my head was my Princess Diana Hat. I didn't dare take off the hat because of the horrendous hat hair.

Having never attended this gala before and not being included in the apparel memo, we managed to make light and did our best to ‘blend in.’ Heh, who am I kidding, I stuck out –I was the only chick wearing pants. Moving from room to raucous room, we'd find the music we liked the best and danced. We loved the blue room where I took a few minutes of footage of dancing tartans (to be uploaded soon). In this room, we suddenly were tossed into a ring of 6 and dancing the Ceilidh (pro. kay-lee). The music so loud I kept telling our new partners that I had no idea what a Ceilidh is –I’ve never seen it before. I can usually muddle my way thru and when I actually know what I'm doing, most have said I’m a good dancer, but I swear these traditional community dances were much like a contact sport.

To wish you were someone else is to waste the person you are.
Once this band finished, we all moved across the gallery like cattle to the next hall to take out the next unassuming batch of innocents. We were dodging bodies to find an open space and at that moment, a tall young Scot (think a tall Hugh Grant) in full regalia, sporran and all, stopped entertaining the group of ladies he was surrounded by. We stood face to face, the women parted like a horseshoe to allow me space and the Scot bent down and whispered in my ear with his English accent,“I-love-your-hat.” Grabbing my left hand, he kissed it and said something like, “You-look-maaag-nif-icent.” From a romantic’s point of view, the moment had it all. I just chuckled and thanked him.

Andrew and I both giggled, then moved into the room and danced until we were kicked out; we were just a couple of happy-go-lucky Hobbits at home in the shire.

Lesson to be learned? To thine own self be true. If you love it and you know it looks good on you, by all means wear it. Wear it proudly. You might just get kissed in front of all the other girls.

Museum of Scotland

Having visited the museum 10 years ago, Andrew encouraged us to take in this marvelous Museum of Scotland while it rained.

We had only 2 hours to view the exhibits, so I flipped a coin to determine which floors to hit first. Argh! What a deliberation. Hooray for me, they allowed photographs!! Woo-hoo!

Initially, I wanted to hit the Victorian floor first, but then decided that when I saw primitive exhibit 'round the corner, I fluttered in like a moth to flame.

A Macabre SideNote
We came upon one of the first horse-drawn hearses introduced from Bolton, East Lothian. The use began in the 1780s when the Victorians evolved their mourning process into an elaborate etiquette that included accessories and even a funeral invitation! I thought this would be a fabulous invite for a Halloween party. If anyone decides to do this -please send me one!

Edinburgh: A Haunted Side

Upon reading much of the haunted sightings within Scotland, the Greyfriars Kirk (Scottish for "church") is renowned for spirits reaching thru and pinching people -specially after dark.

We got a late start, our honeymoon MO, but we just had to make a detour this morning to Candlemaker Row before our tour thru the Museum of Scotland. Oh-kay, it was early afternoon, but we had to walk about the most haunted grounds in Britain and take some captivating photos of headstones, graves, burial vaults, mausoleums, memorials, and even a former prison.

Some find the grounds creepy, but I found them quite comforting -call me weird. The landscape was undulating and filled with extremely beguiling architecture. What I found most intriguing is that some memorials appeared as though they had built-in hearths -it's as though it beckoned one to build a fire and hang about for awhile.

Update: I picked up a couple of books about Edinburgh's haunted and sininster side and discovered that this graveyard is one of the most noteably haunted.
